Pool design

Pool designers offer quite different things for a fee, from a quick sketch to full drawings. The same questions to each show what you would be paying for.

01Will you see the site before you draw anything?Slope, soil, access and where the sun falls all shape the design.
02What will the design give me?Drawings, a list of finishes, a price to build, or all of these.
03Which kinds of pool do you design?Concrete, fibreglass or another kind. Ask which they would choose for your yard, and why.
04Do you also build the pool, or only design it?If only design, ask who builds from the drawings.
05Where will the pool barrier sit in the plans, and where will any gate be?Ask to see them on the plan with the rest of the design.
06Who arranges any permission the job needs?And whether that is part of the design fee.
07How many rounds of changes are in the fee?And what a further change costs.
08How long until the drawings are ready?Ask for a date.
09Is this the full fee for the design?Site visit, drawings and changes included.

What changes the price

A sloping or tight block, a long way in for machinery, and the shape and depth you want can all change both the design fee and the price to build.

Finishes and what goes around the pool, such as paving, decking and planting, change the total too. Ask each designer whether their price to build includes them.

Before you meet a designer

Think about how the pool will be used: laps, children playing, or cooling off on a hot afternoon. It decides the shape and depth more than looks do.

Gather photos of pools you like, and any plans you have of the house and the block. Mark where you picture the pool, and where you would sit near it.

    Shows whether a business's ABN is active or cancelled, its business type and its GST status, and the Register says the public can use it to check a business before buying.
